THE REAL PEOPLE
Before Britpop was a buzzword, The Real People were already laying the foundations. Formed in Liverpool by brothers Tony and Chris Griffiths, they were the original blueprint – combining jangling guitars, raw northern soul, and big melodies that echoed through the ‘90s and beyond.
Have a listen:
Signed in ’89 and releasing their self-titled debut soon after, the band hit the ground running – touring globally, sharing stages with Bowie, The Pixies and Inspiral Carpets, and turning heads with tracks like Window Pane and Open Up Your Mind. Alongside a string of standout releases, they were hard at work shaping the early sound of a little-known band called Oasis.
It was in The Real People’s studio that Noel and Liam found their feet – and recorded the now-legendary Live Demonstration tape. Tony laid down backing vocals on Supersonic, Chris co-wrote Rockin’ Chair, and their influence can be heard all over Definitely Maybe.
With fans ranging from Cher to Paul Weller and a back catalogue bursting with indie gold, The Realies are back on the road with full band and sharing the stories behind the songs that helped define an era.
Catch them at The Newgate Social for a night of legendary tunes, Scouse swagger, and a bit of Britpop history up close.
Supported by, Wolfred, led by the magnetic Wilf Stone. With regular airplay on BBC Introducing, Spark FM and Amazing Radio, Wolfred have been steadily building a reputation for huge choruses, anthemic melodies and a live show that commands attention.
They’ve already taken stages at The Glasshouse, The Grove and The Cluny, and their latest single Repeat marks a new era for the band – bringing urgency, melody and power in equal measure. For fans of acts like Kings of Leon or The War on Drugs, Wolfred are fast becoming one of the North East’s essential new bands.
Also, supporting are Brother, a band already causing a stir across the region. Fronted by lifelong friends John Cardill and Jon Corbett (both formerly of The Ballarats and The Greeting Committee), Brother channel the widescreen intensity of The National, Nick Cave and Interpol, blending it with the raw, windswept grit of their North Shields hometown.
With their debut EP on the horizon, Brother’s appearance at The Newgate Social offers Newcastle audiences a chance to catch a rising force on the cusp of something big.
This event is for over 18s only.
